Founder, President
Whitney was born and raised in Boulder, Colorado. An avid animal lover, she fostered for the Boulder Humane Society and Dumb Friends League and volunteered at veterinarian clinics throughout high school. Despite loving animals, she decided veterinarian medicine was not for her, and earned a bachelor's in Psychology from Colorado State University in 2010. Subsequently, Whitney spent almost five years working at Mount Saint Vincent (MSV), a residential treatment center in Colorado for children with emotional and behavioral disorders. It was at MSV that Whitney decided to pursue a career focused on Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT). While volunteering with the Oceanic Society in Belize shortly afterward, she had the opportunity to swim with a pod of seven wild dolphins and decided that wild dolphins would be the animals she wanted to work with in her mental health program. However, there was scant research on the impact of AAT for children with emotional and behavioral disorders and even less on the impact of dolphin interactions for this population.
Whitney left MSV and moved to Michigan to pursue a doctorate in Social Psychology and a certification in Human-Animal Interventions from Oakland University. She earned the certificate and her masters in 2017, and her PhD in 2020. Her thesis focused on the impact of companion animals on adolescent's mental health, including a case study of AAT for teenagers in residential treatment. Her dissertation focused on the impact of three different types of dolphin interactions on children's mental health, and it was during this research that she met Denis Richard and started working with Water Planet. Whitney and her husband moved to Panama City Beach in 2021 to fulfill Whitney's dream - creating a program for children with emotional and behavioral disorders working with wild dolphins.
